Captain Marvel brings with it some serious expectations. Not only is it Marvel Studios' first solo film starring a female character, it's the final entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the arrival of Avengers: Endgame. But while many questions remain about the movie -- no, seriously, who is Jude Law playing? -- this week may have brought the answer to one of them: its runtime.
An entry on the AMC Theatres website lists Captain Marvel as 2 hours and 10 minutes in length, placing the film smack-dab in the middle of Marvel Cinematic Universe releases.
Of the 20 films in the MCU to date, Captain Marvel is tied with Thor: Ragnarokas the 1oth-longest. But it's also within five minutes of two other Phase Three films, Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and within four minutes of 2008's franchise-launching Iron Man.
The longest films in the MCU tend to be the Avengers films. Even Captain America: Civil War, which is the second-longest at a whopping 2 hours and 28 minutes, is an Avengers film in all but name. Avengers: Endgame could reach three hours, according to its directors, making it easily the longest film in the MCU.
Meanwhile, the riskier entries in each era of the universe tend to actually by the shortest of the Marvel movies. Thor, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange were all considered risky endeavors in first, second, and third phases of the MCU, respectively. All three of them are among the five shortest entries in the entire universe (with Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk actually being tied for shortest of them all.) But each of those films still managed to succeed in their own right, helping push the MCU forward.
Marvel has made a name for itself as a studio by producing a reliable string of successes. The films tend to follow a formula, but it clearly works, as the MCU has grown to become the highest-grossing franchise in cinema history, with $15 billion worldwide.
